Acrylic on canvas, 2020
“Kaalpa is the home of our ancestors, where they hunted and lived from the land. They’re deeply connected to this land, and have been for thousands of years. I remember the feeling of returning to the land for the first time as an adult. Some of my elders took me there and told me: “This is your Country, this is your home. It’s yours and your little sister’s and your grandfathers’ country.”
I went hunting there, got a parnajarrpa (sand goanna). It’s got kapi (water) there, a well, jurnu (soak) and tuwa (sandhills)” When I went there I was pukurlpa (happy inside). It opened up my spirt, and felt like home. Ngurra is home.”
